“I should feel happy.”  “I’m always tired.”  “I can’t enjoy things anymore.” “Nothing matters.”

When depression shows up, life becomes hard.

Depression can sap the joy and vibrance from life, deplete our energy and motivation, and make us lose hope. Sometimes it can feel like it is swallowing us whole. Often we withdraw from friends and loved ones while we struggle, alone, in our experience.

And yet, we are not alone.

Nearly every American adult experiences depression at some point.  Though depression is normal, we can also tend to write it off as being some other day to day thing, like tiredness, soreness, and irritability, and so many of us don’t seek help.

Making matters worse, depression has been heavily stigmatized and pathologized by society.  If you do an online search for “what is depression,” several of the first sites that come up define it as a major disorder.  This leads to many people feeling there is something wrong with them and they get the sense that depression is a sickness they have contracted, rather than a natural experience that so many of us face.

These feelings of sadness and depression can emerge for so many different reasons.  Sometimes depression starts off small and slowly builds up over time.  Sometimes it begins in a big wave after a trauma or major life event like the death of a loved one.  And sometimes depression can show up “out of the blue,” with no immediately recognizable cause.

No matter where depression is coming from or how long you’ve felt this way, I’m here to help.

Regain harmony and balance

My name is Jack Rubin, and a main reason I founded my practice is to help people overcome depression and regain a sense of balance and harmony.

Whether depression feels mild or whether it feels like it is swallowing us whole, it is very common for us to try to avoid the feelings, numb them out, or disregard them all together. The problem with this though, is that these feelings are typically trying to communicate something to us or protect us in some way.  If we can learn to allow them and listen into them, it can often lead us to a greater freedom and understanding in our lives and for the feelings of being stuck in the sadness or depression to be able to pass.
